Throughout the ICEBERG project, we will introduce the people working on the project. In this personal introduction, Chloé Martin from the University of Oulu introduces herself and shares what inspires her about ICEBERG.

Moi!
My name is Chloé Martin and I will be substituting Ashley Gipson as project assistant for the remainder of the ICEBERG project. Originally from France, I landed in Oulu nine years ago for an Erasmus exchange. I stayed for six months, but my heart settled here.
I went back and forth for years, completing a Master Degree in Creative Writings and Publishing in Paris. I worked for three years in a publishing house, where I gained experience in leading projects. I was in charge of promoting non-fiction, from poetry to scientific essays.
I then moved to Switzerland where I worked as a bookseller. I am pretty versatile, definitely curious, and not scared of novelty!
While working for ICEBERG, I am doing a PhD on “Memory and Mental Illness in French and Finnish Contemporary Literatures”. If a poem could sum up my mindset, it would be this one:

Within the ICEBERG project, I am helping with the administration and logistics so as to make everyone’s work easier. I make sure all members have access to a clean, tidy workspace with all the documentation available.
I am basically the modern and human version of Clippit (I am sure you remember this cute paperclip from Microsoft Office 97!) I fix problems, hopefully before they occur, format documents and keep track of the EU deadlines and requirements to ensure a successful outcome of the project.
Now, let me tell you a little secret: I can spot a double space from a very long distance. Working in a Publishing House has turned me into a typo-killer and I am very perfectionist… But don’t say this to anyone!
What brought me to ICEBERG is the urge to tackle climate change and pollution. As I said during my interview, as far as my research may seem to ICEBERG, they do have something in common: the need to listen to minorities as well as to protect what and who is vulnerable.
If environmental concerns are absent from my research, it does take into account social and cultural violences which, for me, emerge from the same system.
The gender-sensitive approach is thus particularly relevant to me. When I lived in Paris, I also went to several climate marches and took direct action. I am particularly interested in the policy making aspects of the project. I want to know what can be done, and how, at a European level.

At the end of the Covid pandemic, my mum told me that had she known what the world would look like twenty years after I was born, she would have thought twice… I want her to know that we can, still, make a change.
