Throughout the ICEBERG project, we will introduce the people working on the project. In this personal introduction, Luisa Lollio from the University of Oulu introduces herself and shares what inspires her about ICEBERG.

Hi! My name is Luisa Lollio and I am a doctoral researcher in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Oulu. I am originally from Italy, but my research interests have taken me closer and closer to the Arctic. In ICEBERG, I work as a researcher in Work Package 2.
My role in ICEBERG is to research how people observe and perceive the effects of pollution and environmental changes in South Greenland. To explore this topic, I have been conducting ethnographic fieldwork in Qaqortoq, Narsaq and Nanortalik in the past years, conducting interviews, focus groups and following my participants in their everyday life.
My research focuses on livelihoods and practices related to seals. Seals are an extremely important aspect of the everyday life for many people in South Greenland and a fundamental part of their connection to the coastal environment.
Looking into human-seal relations allows me to gain a deeper understanding of people’s experiences with pollution and environmental changes, thereby addressing global challenges in a way that is locally relevant. My work in the project helps to ensure that local perspectives, ideas, concerns and hopes are vital parts of the knowledge produced.

I have always been interested in researching people’s relation with the ocean and the animals that live in it. ICEBERG gives me the unique opportunity to research a topic that I deeply care about while visiting different places and meeting many amazing people.
As an early career researcher, I feel particularly lucky to have the chance to work alongside an interdisciplinary team and local communities, discovering different ways of conducting research. In this way, ICEBERG allows me to learn how different disciplines and knowledge systems can come together to address global issues.
