ICEBERG is an EU-funded project focused on researching ocean and coastal pollution, and on developing governance and resilience strategies in collaboration with local communities. Please note: the views expressed are those of the project team and do not reflect those of the European Union.

What to submit

A photo that shows:

  • Environmental action or success story: a clean-up effort, a community initiative
  • A place you are helping to protect or restore
  • Pollution and your vision for change. What should this place look like instead?

How to enter

Step 1: Upload your own photo + a short description.
Step 2: Fill-in the form with your contact info.

Your photo will be part of the ICEBERG Community Monitoring Platform, working with communities in Iceland, Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland), and Svalbard to track pollution and protect nature. Your entry helps build an interactive map of community stories and actions for a healthier Arctic.

Rules

Who can participate?

Anyone aged 18 years or older, who is a resident of Akureyri and Húsavik regions, is welcome to participate.

27 May 2025

What to submit?

Submit 1 photo that shows:

  • Environmental action or success story: such as a clean-up effort, or a community initiative
  • A place you are helping to protect or restore
  • Pollution and your vision for change. What should this place look like instead?

It can be a picture from your album, from your phone, computer, or a picture you specifically did for this contest. You should be the sole author of your photo and hold the copyrights.

Each submission should include the following information:

  • Contact information: your first name and last name
  • Add a short comment: Where and when was the photo taken? Why did you choose it? If your photo shows pollution, share your vision – what should this place look like instead?

Photo format

  • Images should be submitted in their original resolution without modification.
  • Images must not have been published or received an award in any other competition.
  • Photos in digital or in print format will be accepted, photos can be in black and white or in colors

Jury Voting

A local jury will select the winners from all the entries. Official award ceremony will take place on 28 or 30 May 2025 in Húsavik.

Prizes

1st Prize „Best Picture“

All submitted photos will be included in the ICEBERG Community Monitoring Platform – a tool engaging communities in Iceland, Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland), and Svalbard to track pollution and protect nature. Your entry helps build an interactive map of community stories and actions for a healthier Arctic.

Important – Conditions of participation:

The images submitted as part of the photo competition may not be considered obscene, insulting, defamatory, ethically offensive, glorifying violence, pornographic, harassing, unsuitable for minors, racist, inciting hatred, xenophobic or otherwise reprehensible. The submission of such images will result in exclusion from the photo competition.

Data Property:

  • By participating in the contest, the photographer holds the copyright to the photos submitted. The photographers release the project team and its partners from possible claims by third parties and state that they are the sole owners of the rights to the image.
  • By submitting your photo and a brief comment, you agree that your photo and its accompanying caption will be included in the ICEBERG Community Monitoring Platform. Your name as author of the photographs will be credited, unless you choose to remain anonymous.
  • This photo contest is part of a research project on people’s perspectives on environmental disturbances. By participating you allow the researchers to use your photo and caption for non-commercial scientific work (scientific publications, scientific conferences). Your name will be credited, unless you request to remain anonymous.

Voluntary participation and right to withdraw consent:

Your participation in this project is entirely voluntary and you can at any time withdraw from the project by simple verbal notice and without having to justify your decision. Your withdrawal will be of no consequence to you. You can request that your photo be removed from the ICEBERG Community Monitoring Platform. Consent to data processing may be revoked at any time. As far as the consent is not revoked, it is valid for a 5 year time period.
