ICEBERG enters its third year: General Assembly 2026 in Bologna, Italy

From 20-22 January 2026, the General Assembly hosted by our partner Instituto di Scienze Polari / Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerch in Bologna, Italy marked the entering of ICEBERG into its third year. The meeting brought together consortium partners, Advisory Board members, early-career researchers, and local collaborators, providing a valuable opportunity to review progress, exchange knowledge, and plan the last phase of the project. Across three intensive days of discussions, workshops, and hands-on sessions, participants reflected on achievements so far and explored how ICEBERG will continue to deliver impact across science, policy, and society.

A warm thank you to our exceptional hosts, Dr Tommaso Tesi and his team, as well as the ISP director Prof. Gabriele Panieri for warmly welcoming us during these 3 days.

Here is a look at the key highlights from the meeting.

Day 1 – Project Progress, Communication, and Innovation

The morning of the General Assembly featured a project overview and updates led by UOULU. This was followed by valuable feedback from the European Commission Project Officer, offering strategic guidance for the project’s continued development.

A key focus of the day was Work Package 1, including updates and presentations by Early-Career Researchers, highlighting their strong role within ICEBERG. The session concluded with constructive feedback from the Advisory Board, reinforcing the project’s scientific and societal relevance.

In the afternoon, the focus moved to Work Package 4, which combined progress updates with an interactive workshop on returning knowledge and results and giving back to communities. Work Package 5 with KASKAS presented developments related to communication and outreach, and guided an interactive workshop on planning the communication, dissemination and outreach activities for the most important stakeholder groups.

The day closed with a hands-on workshop on creating object detection models using machine learning from scratch, offering participants practical skills of emerging digital tools relevant to ICEBERG’s research themes. This first day of our General Assembly concluded with a social dinner on the Piazza Maggiore right in the city centre of Bologna, offering an informal setting to strengthen connections among consortium and Advisory Board members, and continue the discussions that started during this inspiring and productive day.

Day 2 – Project progress, Infrastructure, and Community Engagement

The second morning was dedicated to Work Package 2, focusing on updates related to citizen science activities, and the environment-community-health nexus. This session encouraged open discussion across disciplines with major inputs from ECRs and feedback from Advisory Board members.

Following lunch, participants enjoyed a demonstration of ISP-CNR equipment, showcasing local research infrastructure and strengthening collaboration between partners.
The afternoon was dedicated to Work Package 3, including progress updates and Advisory Board feedback, followed by a hand-on Workshop in World Café format on deepening our policy recommendations to science funders.

Day 3 – Policy Dialogue and Future Directions

The final day focused on Work Package 3 stakeholder engagement, with an interactive workshop on policy recommendations targeting policy makers, while a parallel ECR session and internal meeting provided space for early-career researchers to exchange experiences and align activities.

Later in the morning, Work Package 5 returned to the spotlight with a dedicated session on the project video, highlighting the importance of local voices and effective communication.
The afternoon looked to the future, with a dedicated session that explored sustainability, legacy, and opportunities beyond the ICEBERG project’s lifetime.
